Ancient coral reef tells the history of Kenya's soil erosion
Coral reefs, like tree rings, are natural archives of climate change. But oceanic corals also provide a faithful account of how people make use of land through history, says Stanford University scientist Robert B. Dunbar. In a recent study published in Geophysical Research Letters, Dunbar and his colleagues used coral samples from the Indian Ocean to create a 300-year record of soil erosion in Ken(eurekalert)

Role of Bathymetry in Tsunami Devastation Along the East Coast of India
The powerful earthquake measuring about Mw 9.3 in magnitude of 26 December 2004, nucleated in the northwestern coast of Sumatra, caused the most devastating tsunami ever recorded in the southeastern region of India. Most of the southern part of India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia faced the brunt of the natural phenomenon.

Australia's Coast Battered by Tsunamis
Australia's coastline has felt the impact of almost 50 tsunamis in the past 150 years, according to the first catalogue of all such events. Dr Dale Dominey-Howes from Macquarie University in Sydney brought together records of these huge ocean waves from a host of different sources in an effort to help improve tsunami protection efforts.

Luminescence Studies on the Sediments laid down by the December 2004 Tsunami Event
The tsunami of 26 December 2004 was associated with an Mw 9.3 earthquake. This was the second largest earthquake ever recorded. Geodynamic processes leading to such earthquakes suggest that these are repetitive. It is therefore desirable to obtain their recurrence interval. Earlier attempts to date palaeo-tsunami sediments have assumed that the basic premises for the use of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) are adequately met. The sediments transported by the 2004 tsunami provided a maiden opportunity to verify the basic premises of the zeroing of the luminescence at the time of deposition.

December 26 Tsunami Likely Triggered by Subduction Zone Earthquake
A massive undersea earthquake measuring 9.3 on the Richter triggered the December 26 tsunami; it's a known fact. But now an international team of geologists have revealed that the tsunami was probably caused by a phenomena where tectonic plates lock over each other creating upheavals in the water volume above the fault line.

Folded Sediment Unusual in Sumatran Tsunami Area (PhysOrg)
Sediment folding may have added to the exceptionally large tsunami that struck Sumatra on Dec. 26, 2004, according to an international team of geologists. "Tsunami models consider the rebound of the plate during the earthquake, but do not include permanent deformation, like folding, of the upper plate." says Dr. Donald M. Fisher, professor of geosciences at Penn State.(yahoo tsunami)

Earthquake Predicted in Mizoram
Aizawl is at the risk of being shaken by a massive earthquake at any time. This has been confirmed by Dr Lalliana Mualchin, an NRI who is a renowned seismologist in the United States of America (USA). When asked for his comment, the Mizo top scientist termed as useless the Mizoram government sending a team of officials to study the tsunami in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands recently. "Tsunami is and will never be a threat to Mizoram. So it was totally unnecessary to send a study team." he further quoted.
