Tsunami Shield to Combat Calamity

Shibnath Maity, senior scientist of Central Mining Research Institute (CMRI), Dhanbad, received the prestigious Aryabhatta award on November 26 for developing the “tsunami shield”, an affordable and foolproof device to combat the natural calamity. Returning from New Delhi, Maity said the shield, developed particularly to tide over the unpredictable tsunami, is a work of prolonged research and study at the CMRI.

Mangroves Against the Waves

What causes a tsunami? Oceanographers often refer to tsunamis as seismic sea waves, usually the result of a sudden rise or fall of a section of the earth's crust under or near the ocean. A seismic disturbance can displace the water column creating a rise or fall in the level of the ocean above. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources in Thailand said afterwards that mangroves still undisturbed in some areas had helped to save hundreds of lives. UN Global Environment Facility explains: "Mangroves form an effective barrier against any type of wave. It takes the energy out of the wave, so while the forest itself will be thrashed, it will protect the infrastructure behind it".

Reefs May Mitigate Tsunami Damage

Given the critical role of coral reefs in providing food and livelihoods for millions of people, scientists rushed to complete an assessment of the coral reefs along those coastlines especially hard-hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The new report reveals that many of the coral reef ecosystems in the region were surprisingly resilient to the effects of the tsunami, and were also largely responsible for protecting other marine systems from the ravages of the tsunami.

Mitigating tsunami damage with mangroves

Mangroves forests are coastal ecosystems typically serve as homes for fish, crustaceans, sponges, and other sea creatures. With complex, intertwined root systems, they also prevent coastal erosion, function as a crude water filter, and serve as a natural barrier for strong currents. In normal waves, a mangrove forest can absorb 70-90% of the force of a wave. While no studies measuring how much of the impact of a tsunami-like event have been made, some rough data has been culled.
