Disaster Management: Flood of opportunities

India being a nation where natural calamities strike every now and then, the need for trained disaster management professionals is felt acutely, especially in the wake of the tsunami. Natural disasters take a heavy toll of human life and property year after year. Every year, at least four cyclones of varying intensity hit parts of India's nearly 6,000-km-long coastline. Since natural calamities tend to be unavoidable and unpredictable, efforts have to be made to withstand them. The support of trained personnel is required to provide the information and knowledge to forewarn us of impending calamities.

Chasing Storms : Documentary on Cyclone and Storms

Now in a documentary produced by Miditech, director Animitra Chakrabarty has followed scientists’ obsessed with uncovering the mysteries of cyclones. Super Cyclones follows storms in three countries —India, Japan and Australia and follows the scientists who study them. “There is no area on the planet that is safe from storms but some areas are more prone to cyclones than others. Through the documentary we have followed the devastation caused by storms in highly populated areas,” says Pria Somiah, Vice President of Documentary at Miditech.

Disaster Management Course Begins (Indian Express via Yahoo! India News)

The Inderprastha University in collaboration with the CISF started a five-day Disaster Management Course for its students today. The University's Surajmal Complex looked more like a base camp as the CISF contingent set up tents on campus. Up Close With the Aftermath of Tsunami

A two-part mini-series that captures the pain and misery of survivors of the deadly tsunami will be aired on HBO television channel on December 26 and 30. "Tsunami: The Aftermath" focuses on the harrowing aftermath of the catastrophe that hit not just the locals but also the tourists.

A Series on Aftermath of Tsunami Premieres on HBO December 26

Two years after the tsunami hit the Andaman coast of Thailand, the harrowing effects of the natural disaster will be captured on celluloid by a new series to be premiered on Indian television later this month. Focussing on the sense of personal loss and the arduous battle for survival experienced by those at the recieving end of the tragedy will be 'Tsunami-The Aftermath', a mini series that premieres on the HBO Channel on December 26.

UN Stresses Key Role of Communications in Mitigating Impact of Disasters

USGS Science at the American Geophysical Union

New discoveries about Tsunamis, Hurricane Coastal & Barrier Island Destruction, Improved Predictive Modeling for Hazardous Earthquakes and Landslides, etc. will be featured during 2006 AGU. Eric Geist will offer his analysis of the variability between earthquake size and tsunami run-ups in a news conference about the catastrophic Indian Ocean tsunami and what has been learned in the two years since it occurred. This press conference will be Thursday, December 14, at 11:00 a.m.
