These are most likely to be more damaging than past events as the coastal areas are more developed,” asserts a University of the West Indies research report written by James Lander.Lander goes on to document the near 2400 fatalities that tsunamis have caused throughout the Caribbean from 1692-1946, and concludes that “the current history is sufficient to indicate that there is a significant hazard from future tsunamis.”

Chennai, March 25 (IANS) Two desalination plants and a healthcare centre, set up by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with KPMG group of industries as a relief measure for more than 1,000 victims of the December 2004 tsunami, were Tuesday opened in Tamil Nadu. The disaster killed nearly 12,000 people on India’s east coast, mostly in Tamil Nadu, and snatched the homes and livelihood of about 200,000 people.
